Offshore Wind Power

  • What is floating offshore wind power?

  • Unlike the fixed type in which the turbine is installed on a foundation fixed to the seabed, the turbine is installed and operated on a floating body. It can be installed in the deep sea more than 60m, so it can utilize the excellent sea resources of the distant sea, and it is relatively free from location restrictions, so it has the advantage that it is possible to create a large-scale complex.

Floating offshore wind power is expected to play an important role in realizing 2050 carbon neutrality in Korea, which is surrounded on three sides by the sea, in that it exceeds the existing method and utilizes even distant sea resources.

Ulsan, which once enjoyed a revival with the world's No. 1 shipbuilding infrastructure, is preparing to rise again based on natural conditions and shipbuilding/offshore plant echnology and infrastructure. Movement for industry is accelerating.

”Ulsan will leap from the industrial capital in the era of fossil fuels to the industrial capital in the era of clean energy”

Offshore Wind Floating Floating Type Classification

Floating body type Spar-buoy Semi-Submersible Tension Leg Platform
Required marine equipment semi-submersible fleet, barge, lift crane A tugboat Similar to tugboat, spa type
Stability ballasting buoyancy high stability but high mooring equipment cost
Manufacturing difficulty cylindrical structure most complex welds relatively simple welds
Turbine assembly site deep water depth (more than 100m) construction port construction port
Characteristics little movement by waves low required depth of water fixed to the seabed with a tensioned mooring line

mooring line method Chain Rope Chain + Rope
mooring radius large (within 600m) small (below 100m) medium (within 500m)
Installation difficulty simple complex (tension required) medium
potential risk Inducing changes in the seabed
with a large footprint
(environmental impact)
Highest risk of breaking the
mooring line due to high tension
Moderate risk of suspension
and tension angles
